THE WOMEN IN THE OUTDOORS PROGRAM

Did You Know

Today, thousands and thousands of women are joining the ranks of outdoor enthusiasts. Today, more than ever before, women are finding that the outdoors is a new frontier that’s opening doors into a world they never knew and the Women in the Outdoors program is playing a vital role in blazing that frontier. There are many women today who are taking to the lakes, fields, and streams who are enjoying various sports. The women who participate in our Women in the Outdoors workshops come from all walks of life, different backgrounds and experience levels. No matter what your level of skill is, we have something everyone can learn from and enjoy!

An integral part of keeping the hunting heritage alive is the women who make up the members of the NWTF’s Women in the Outdoors program.

Learning new skills, meeting people with similar interests and enjoying the great outdoors is what the NWTF’s Women in the Outdoors program is all about.

Spending time with family and friends is an important motivation for women to participate in all outdoors activities…including hunting and fishing.

As a result of the Women in the Outdoors program, participants have been stimulating our nation’s economy. Almost half of Women in the Outdoors members bought sporting equipment. After participating in a Women in the Outdoors event, many women made significant purchases for hunting, fishing, and camping equipment, mainly shotguns, bows, rifles, camp stoves, and fishing rods.

Our events draw women anywhere from 14 years old and up, 38 is the current median age of a Women in the Outdoors event participant.

The most favorite activities at events include:

Fishing
Hunting
Camping
Shooting a shotgun
Birdwatching
Backyard habitat
Hiking/backpacking
Shooting a handgun
Shooting a rifle
Outdoor photography

These facts are just the tip of the iceberg and the growing numbers of women who are getting involved in outdoor activities is phenomenal. If we stop to think for a moment what an impact women are having on the country’s economy from becoming involved with outdoor activities, it’s absolutely incredible. Not only are we making an impact on our national economy, but we are also bringing more and more business into our local economy as well. From every dirt road in the country to every city street, women are making a positive impact on our economy.

There are several reasons why the Women in the Outdoors program is so important:

  • Women represent the fastest growing market for outdoor equipment and clothing.
  • Women learn outdoor skills that allow them to enjoy the outdoors while they also build self-confidence and competence in a non-threatening atmosphere.
  • Women make many of the decisions regarding use of family leisure and vacation time.
  • Women influence the ideas and activities of the coming generations.

The NWTF hopes that by introducing more women to outdoor activities, it will help involve the entire family in the conservation of our natural resources.

The future of wildlife conservation and preserving our nation’s hunting heritage hinges on the involvement of our children. We must educate our youth and involve them in conservation efforts at an early age.

The Women in the Outdoors program offers women a means for obtaining skills and knowledge that will hopefully be handed down to our children (our future). Women also make up the largest percentage of voters in the United States.  As more women become involved in our program, learn the importance of wildlife conservation and support us in our efforts, we will no doubt see them making a difference for the shooting sports and conservation in the voting booths.

Being a member of Women in the Outdoors offers women the opportunity to come together, learn together, make new friends, meeting inspiring women and have a lot of fun. The memories you make, the friends you find, and the knowledge you acquire through this program is priceless!

What we love, we treasure and hope to preserve as outdoor enthusiasts depends on education, involvement, and the willingness to say, “I can make a difference.”
